The Geological Survey of Ethiopia(GSE) had first been organized in 1968 as a department within the Ministry of Mines and Energy(MME). It was then established in 1982 as an autonomous government organization accountable to MME.

The main objectives of the Survey are to prospect, explore, delineate and estimate ore deposits, groundwater resources, thereby accelerating economic growth of the country.
